Back to what I’m supposed to be doing, here: focusing on just the part of anatomy that I’m currently studying. At least for the first one. After that things didn’t go so well.
Tonight’s victory, I think, is the first one, the legs. I’m pretty happy with how it came out. The second, I was going to do legs again, but the model set up with her back to me and I didn’t want to move my whole easel around the room, so I just grabbed the sketchpad and a pencil, and the light was so interesting that I ended up doing everything BUT the legs, fretting over trying to get a likeness on a head the size of a dime, which is just about impossible. And the third demonstrates aptly why it’s important to understand the planes of the body, which I don’t; there’s this huge wasteland between her knees and armpits that is an undifferentiated mass of shadow shapes. Copying the shadow shapes is fine, but without understanding the planes, it’s not very convincing.
