Meanwhile, back on the farm

The tomatoes were disappointing this year, and my herb garden was pretty small and contained, but the potato plant that popped up in my compost pile is coming along very nicely.

This Year’s Crop…

…has been, well, underwhelming.

That’s about 3/5 of the yield from five plants: three in pots, two in the ground. Two others in the ground didn’t grow or sprout anything at all. There’s still 8 or 10 green ones on the vines.

Better than no tomatoes at all, and they’re from great organic [...]

This summer’s harvest

…has been small. And the tomatoes themselves are nowhere near the grapefruit-sized monster heirlooms from last year’s that they were seeded from… but then again, they’re just planted on a rocky hillside that’s in shade half the day. It’s a miracle anything comes out of them at [...]

Farm Update

Only about half of the tomato sprouts came up, but I still think we’re going to be awash in them. Basil, oregano and parsley are underway too.

Ahhhh, summer. Look at those glorious, strong tomato plants down front and along the railing. All from seeds saved from a tomato last [...]

Tomato Larvae

Nothing says summer like the smell of tomato leaves on your fingertips.

Only about half of the sprouts that I planted grew into plants, but that still leaves me with about 20 plants (and I still have more seeds for a late-summer crop). If these are even remotely like the [...]

That didn’t take long

This guy popped his head out today. Six of his friends followed suit. They can’t WAIT to get in the ground.

That’s good, because I can’t wait to eat them.

Farm 2007!

First Farm post of 2007. Woohoo! It begins.

This year’s crop: tomatoes. Nothing else so far. I saved an heirloom tomato form the organic farm last summer, and, not knowing if this would work, squeezed out the seeds into a paper towel and sealed them in a baggie for the [...]

The Real End Of Summer

Now it’s officially over. I strung it out as long as I could, but with temperatures dropping below freezing tonight, I finally tromped out with my bowl and flashlight and gathered up the rest of the harvest:

Such a promising start this season, and it just plain petered out. [...]

This Year’s Verdict

It’s time to tell it like it is, sports fans: This year’s crop was an utter failure.

All of the herbs died. I couldn’t even keep rosemary alive in the pot it came in. And the front area, which I worked so hard to clear and cultivate, removing stumps and [...]

This year’s crop…

…has been underwhelming.

My tomato plants are alive, and even flowering a little, but growing slow, and they’re just not flourishing in the soil I prepped. It’s hard and dry and difficult to water. I poked lots of holes with a pitchfork yesterday and have given it a couple of [...]
